Anyone know how this is legal? It is a 2003 Hilux that the guy allegedly drove it up from Guatemala, registered and titled it in Georgia, then again in Texas. With all of the vehicle seizures by the Feds, I’d be a bit paranoid to buy this.

Unless he lives in an alternate universe where the year is 2028 then no, it’s not legal.

If he has dual citizenship or maintains an address in the country where he bought it, it might be legal for him . But it’s not going to be legal for anybody else.

Though it would be very shady, I’m sure you could find a rusted out salvage 2003 tacoma and debadge and vin swap...

There’s a difference between something being legal and having plates and tags. That Hilux will have a date with a CBP crusher at some point.

Maybe it’s imported on a “Similar to” clause. Similar to the Tacoma? Maybe he just has it registered as a Tacoma. I would stay away.

“Similar to” doesn’t cover the emissions regulations. Toyota never sold that diesel engine here in a passenger vehicle, so that would present some issues.

I don’t think I’d drop 15k on this even if it was 100% legit. I get that it’s a diesel 4x4 Hilux but $15k could get a lot of truck. Like 4 of these: http://maine.craigslist.org/cto/5188144521…

Put simply, it’s not legal in the eyes of the federal government. Also every time I see one of these craigslist or ebay adds for something that clearly isn’t legal I want to ask the seller if they will give me my money back when the feds inevitably crush it

That’s just as illegal as leaving it as is

don't you just take it to emissions testing like any other car? 50/50 chance it passes if not just work on it till it does.

If you’re in the same state I probably would go for it just for the uniqueness. It’s not like it stands out from other toyota pickups. No average joe will recognize it.

I have a friend who brought over a 2007 RHD alphard from Hong Kong (I’m in the USA) and has been driving it around for 5 years and he said he hasn’t had any issues. He drove it to yosemite, and a few other long distance road trips too. Of course it’s still incredibly risky.

I wish other sellers would put that many pictures of the car they are selling even though it may not be a legal vehicle :)

US Import laws are awful, here it just wouldn’t be eligible for registration not crushed for just existing.

That is for the state. The state doesn’t give a shit what you register or how as long as it passes their emission test. The feds don’t care what the state allows either. The EPA are the feds, and will team up with Dept. of Homeland Security to wreck your shit.

Just because some clerk at the DMV authorizes a title doesn’t make it legal. It’s probably titled as “2003 Toyota Pickup” which wouldn’t raise any eyebrows at the DMV. They just do title work, they don’t enforce the federal vehicle regulations.

TL;DR it’s illegal as fuck.

That’s not excellent condition, the taillights don’t even match, it has no air bag on the driver’s side, the front seat covers don’t match the rear seats, it’s dirty, it has holes drilled in the dash, and huge decals all over it. It’s probably stolen. I don't see 15k.

Ahh, ok. Yea, I didn't know that about the emissions part. I've been trying to find a way (which there are probably none) to import a 2014 or 2015 Seat Leon. Pretty much no way I'm going to be able to short of buying two and letting the NHTSA fuck one of them up. Saddens me.

Not even then, because it takes more than one vehicle to perform all of the NHTSA testing. You could import one and register it for a year assuming you were a foreign dignitary or someone similar, but the car has to leave the country after a year.
